Corrosion under insulation or CUI is a large problem for the owners of plants. Our client, BP Refinery Rotterdam, also struggled with this problem. Due to poorly functioning insulation and large fluctuations in temperature, an ideal climate is created for the corrosion process. Moreover, owing to the insulation, the surface is hidden from view, so that inspection of pipes and equipment for corrosion is often quite difficult. In order to ensure the integrity of the installation, comprehensive maintenance is necessary. BP recognized this long ago and therefore carries out an extensive CUI program.

Over the years, tens of thousands of m2 of insulated piping has been sandblasted and preserved. Insulated pipe systems which were designed in the 1980’s and 1990’s or renovated during that time, appear to show severe corrosion problems even after a period of just 10 years. Through timely intervention, process failures, unwanted leaks and even accidents can be prevented.

In order not to interrupt the process during the execution of the CUI-programme, the majority of the work is carried out in a plant whilst it’s still in operation. This requires a well-executed approach and also a great awareness for safety.
